This makes a pair with Baser's Farewell to False Paradise (1989). Both are prison films, one literal, the other domestic, and both describe the travails of Turkish women brought to Hamburg by guest-worker husbands. Here a young 'bride', Turna (first seen trying to light an electric stove), is virtually imprisoned in the dingy apartment she shares with a factory worker. 'Why did you lock me in, I'm not an animal!' she screams, which doesn't stop him having sex with her as if she were one. The flashbacks to the 'old country' aren't, however, vaseline-lensed, as they were in Farewell to False Paradise: Turna is going to have to make her own way in Germany.
