A true one-off, Klaus Nomi was a classically trained German tenor with an amazing falsetto range, who found himself the unlikely toast of late ’70s New York with an elaborately designed stage act blending New Wave pop and soaring operatic arias. Attempting to broaden his audience brought artistic compromise, yet just as European success saw him poised on the brink of stardom, he was one of the first celebrities lost to AIDS. This textbook rock doc tells his remarkable story through an expert collage of interviews and archive footage, with sets, graphics and old movie clips themed around the vintage sci-fi from which Nomi cultivated his alien image. Revealing, witty, sad too – and what a voice!
