Twelve years on, Jewish stand-up comic Cohn (Sher) returns to haunt the SS officer (Lindsay) - now a successful Bavarian police commissioner - who commanded the firing squad which executed him. At the same time, the town is beset by a series of bizarre murders of lovers caught in flagrante, and rumour, intrigue and ambition tip the community into self-destructive chaos. Not a bad idea (from a novel by Romain Gary), and not exactly a bad film - but the black comedy would be far blacker and funnier if the direction and acting weren't so awfully, awfully theatrical.
