Shrinking down to a duo hasn't tempered any of the ambition of New York math rockers Battles, who assemble another collection of irregular rhythms and layered melodies on their new album Juice B Crypts. Still without a permanent vocalist (former singer Tyondai Braxton left the group a few years after the release of its 2007 debut, Mirrored), Battles recruits the likes of Xenia Rubinos, Shabazz Palaces and Merrill Garbus of Tune-Yards to flesh out its latest batch of buoyant, synth-riddled tunes. While the band's rapid-fire riffs and genre-blending experimentalism may not seem as novel as it once did, it's still captivating to hear Battles enthusiastically pushing the boundaries of its distinct sound. Psychedelic synth-punks Guerilla Toss open the show.
