The hottest thing in pop music at the moment are English men with GQ looks, soul hooks, electronic rhythm and a certain haircut. Call the haircut the Kim Jong Morrissey—shaved all around and pompadour poof up top. We're talking about John Newman, Sam Smith (who just played SNL) and the style's originator, Dan Smith of Bastille.
Dan Smith and Sam Smith are of no genetic relation, but they share a brand of Britpop, a sort of post-EDM Coldplay. Bastille's debut, Bad Blood, and its single "Pompeii" have burned up the charts with their Ellie-Goulding-plus-Y-chromosome formula. Young women filled the crowd at last night's sold-out show at Riviera Theatre.
Frankly, we're a little surprised Bastille is not high on the Lollapalooza bill. But the band is in Europe. When you're potentially the 21st-century Duran Duran, there's an entire globe to conquer.
