But only if you chip in.
The much-hyped community project was recently approved by the Chicago Park District, reports Our Urban Times. The project backed by Alderman Joe Moreno and Wicker Park residents requires about $30,000 in funding and would be located in the same park the neighborhood is named for. Skating won't cost a thing, and you can try picking up a pair of skates at one of the best thrift stores in Chicago.
The park is located at 1425 N Damen Ave, just a short walk from Big Star.
The rink would be 185 feet long and 85 feet wide and wouldn't be refrigerated, meaning the number of skating days could be limited. Especially with predictions of a mild winter this year.
Ice would be monitored by volunteers who would use water from a nearby fire hydrant. Don't expect this to be the pet project of a ragtag group of Chicagoans though, local landscape architecture firm Culliton Quinn Landscape Architecture designed the rink.
For more information on how to contribute to this wonderful initiative, email Doug Wood, the project's coordinator. Businesses can also sponsor the project and receive advertising along the rink's guard walls (not pictured in the rendering).
