Dozens of cab drivers were blaring their horns and clogging traffic in the Loop this morning in protest of Uber, after the city granted a “transportation network provider” license to the ride sharing service.
The demonstrators refused to pick up passengers from 6am to 10am, and instead decided to throw a temper tantrum over a competitive marketplace. Given that a good deal of cabbies use the app, their protest seems to be misplaced.
Uber has been making big moves in the Chicago area lately. Earlier this week, the company announced that it would be expanding service to six other cities in Illinois, including college towns like Champaign-Urbana and Bloomington-Normal.
For now, it looks like legislation is on the side of services like Uber, Lyft and Sidecar in Chicago, and all that honking appears to be in vain.
