After 4pm Friday through Sunday, the backyard grill of this bilevel wine bar will kick out bacon-cheddar burgers for five bucks and dogs for two. We’ll take ours on the elevated wooden deck, along with one of the “Great American Barbecue” wine picks for $5 a glass.
Matchbox (770 N Milwaukee Ave, 312-666-9292)
The beloved cocktail cranny celebrates its 13th anniversary, along with Independence Day, on Friday night with an outdoor blowout. Fifteen bucks gets you an all-you-can-eat spread including fried chicken, short ribs, smoked pork shoulder and watermelon salad. The food gets going around 4pm and local band the Davis Situation plays at 5pm.

The W Chicago Lakeshore Hotel hosts an alfresco ice-cream social on Friday from 3 to 7pm. Make your own sundae from four ice creams ($4 each), toppings like peanuts and caramel sauce ($2 for four) and shots of booze to pour on top ($4 each).

Skip the downtown crowds and watch the July 3 fireworks from a seat on this massive River North rooftop deck. DJs get the party started around 5pm and go until 2am, then get started again at 11am on Friday, when specials from the grill include cheeseburgers or Italian sausage and sweet-pepper sandwiches for $6.
O’Donovan’s (2100 W Irving Park Rd, 773-478-2100)
Starting at 11am on Friday—and continuing for the next 14 hours—this bar will open its beer garden and offer $5 cocktails in varying fireworks-inspired hues: pink and blue lemonade slushies, pomegranate martinis and, naturally, cherry bombs.
