Outside of supermarkets and the odd bakery, bagels of any note have long been a rare commodity in Bristol. Unlike in London, the city’s bagel front has been pretty barren – that is until Bagel Boy was born. From humble beginnings in a little bar on Park Street, to a standalone space and ‘winnebagel’ mobile unit, the Bagel Boy guys have been gathering fans all over.
Patty purists may scoff at the idea, but you can’t deny the quality of Bagel Boy’s burgers, which occupy a third of its menu alongside classic and supreme sandwiches. The Thai Pig Boy (£5.50) is a particular triumph, featuring spiced pork, onion and cucumber coleslaw, and a tangy chilli mayo that perfectly complements the doughy bagel.
Sides are also pretty special. ‘Fat Willis Fries’ (£4) draped in salt beef, BBQ beans and cheese could satisfy your hunger on their own, while the ‘Whitebait & Tartare’ (£2.50) comprises flavourful fish fancies that cut through the richness of the bagel selection. With a £5 lunch consisting of a classic, snack and a soft drink, they’re cheap to boot.
