On Wednesday April 22, a merry band of 30 stand-ups will imbue the term "running joke" with a whole new meaning, as they literally take to charging around the streets of Bedminster for this year's edition of Comedians on the Run. Over the course of two hours (starting at 7pm), each humorist will hop from venue to venue, delivering a whirlwind 5-10min set in each before hurrying off to the next. It's a feat of performance to take your (and their) breath away – and in recognition of their efforts, the comedians will all be in the running for a £250 prize (voted for by the audience).
The line-up is a who's who of wisecrackers young and old alike, with a focus on regional acts. If you're nimble, you'll be able to catch Fitz, who made his name on Bath's Got Talent (believe us – it does); Craig Leggo, Aussie joker and corporate trainer extraordinaire; West Country-based Sandi Smith, who lit up the BBC New Comedy Awards within months of becoming a stand-up; and many more. We like the ones we know, and we've heard good things about the ones we don't. And in any case, the format ensures that if one comedian isn't delivering the goods, you won't have time to get bored.
The gigs will be hosted in 15 different venues scattered along a mercifully concise area around North Street, East Street and Bedminster Parade. All the area's best pubs and performance venues will be participating, including Windmill Hill City Farm, The Steam Crane and The Old Bookshop. No ticket is needed, and you'll only have to pay for your own drinks – unless you're the lucky audience member who'll pick up the randomly allocated £100, in which case the rounds will be on you.
